Microsoft G.723.1 ACM codec missing in Windows 7 and Server 2008

Hi,

Our product on Windows XP supports playback of WAV files using the Microsoft
G.723.1 (0x42) decoder. We are in the process of extending our product
support to Windows 7 and Server 2008. On both these OSs, the Microsoft
G.723.1 is missing (msg723.acm) and all WAV files using MS G.723.1 fail to
playback.

The list of installed codecs as shown by Windows Media Player > About >
Technical Support Information and msinfo32 > Components > Multimedia > Audio
Codecs does not list msg723.acm on Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise
and Windows Server 2008. The codec is present on Windows XP by default.

Is MS G.723.1 no longer supported on Windows 7 and Sever 2008?

Is MS G.723.1 part of some other Microsoft software that must be installed
on Windows 7 and Server 2008?

Hey Mark,

I had the same question myself, but could never find an answer. I just
needed the codec installed to play back some call recordings we have in that
format.

I noticed on my Windows 7 machine, which was an upgrade from XP, that I had
that codec installed, but on my new Windows 7 laptop the file was missing.
On my Windows 2008 Terminal Servers the file never existed either.

I ended up copying the msg723.acm file from a Windows 2003 Server, dropped
it in the \windows\syswow64 directory, then creating a registry entry to the
file under
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Note\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
REG_SZ msacm.msg723 = msg723.acm .

Now the codec shows up in the Media Player About listing and I can play back
the call recordings.
